Corporate social responsibility within companies ensure that the business is operating in a way that is ethical and more aware of its impact on society. It means they are monitoring their social, economic and environmental impact while ensuring human rights and sustainable development are incorporated in their policies and strategies.
By implementing this into their strategy, businesses shows their eagerness to insure they have a beneficial impact within the community, by preparing a specific agenda to focus on social or environmental issues outside their economical scope, but in line with their mission and believes.
Businesses achieve their corporate social responsibility a number of ways through activities such as:
- Charity partnership
- Relationship development with business partners, employees, customers and any else with vested interest in the company
- Environmental programmes, protection, and sustainability
- Socially responsible investment (SRI)
Participating in the EYP PROGRAM can help your business in finding a way to participate in socially responsible activities and helping young people of the areas where the activities are performed. The project can offer small businesses the possibility to tutor young people needing to improve their employability skills or to mentor others with an entrepreneurial idea. You will also take part to an international network of companies and training organizations that can benefit your business in different ways.

There is now an increase in demand from the public and government bodies to have this incorporated into ever businesses strategy while creating more visibility surrounding their actions. It is now seen to increase competitive advantage while creating more awareness surround the business and building trust within the community. The way in which a business approaches corporate social responsibility could create an advantage when differentiating the company from similar ones while helping them gain a reputable reputation, and the participation to an Transnational European Project can help small businesses to get involved in meaningful activities without have the burden of planning them and have them running.

West Lothian Chamber of Commerce are committed to ensuring our future workforce are given the opportunity to develop their skills to their full potential.
Over the past 2 years we have been developing an ERASMUS + funded project called Employable Young People with five European partners from Italy, Spain, Turkey, Greece and Romania.
We have designed the EYP programme to provide a new way to deliver youth work and to support the personal and professional development of NEETs, aged 16-24, while actively engaging local stakeholders to facilitate their social and work inclusion.
What is the EYP Programme?
The EYP programme aims to improve self-esteem, interpersonal skills, behaviour, and attitude while helping the young people overcome practical barriers. The programme will then be further used to signpost participants to appropriate vocational or education providers that suit the individual’s needs. By looking at the whole person, the programme helps to create a more positive mindset for their future ambitions.
The project is also aimed at trainers, employers and influencers working with young people furthest from the workplace. The toolkit and manual created for the programme will allow them to extend the support and services available to young people who have fallen out of mainstream education and/or are unable to enter the workforce.
The EYP Manual and Toolkit designed for the programme was researched and created by West Lothian Chamber and the programme partners, who are made up of training providers, teachers and business professionals. By having a mix of occupations and backgrounds it allowed the creation of an in-depth guide for the programme with detailed methodology, instructions and valid reasoning behind the activities involved. This will allow future users to use the material to integrate the programme into their organisation to offer more opportunities and links with our future workforce.
By working on programmes such as EYP, we can ensure that our young people have a clearer pathway which will benefit them in the social and employment aspects of their life.
What is next?
The programme is now piloting throughout Europe with our partners and we are looking to start our pilot here in West Lothian this Autumn. The pilot, using the manual and toolkit will be launched with the help of local education organisations and businesses. After the successful completion of the pilots, the EYP Program will then be ready to be integrated into any youth projects, businesses and educational institutes that have the same aim.
Το ευρωπαϊκό ζργο «ΕΥP: Απαςχοληςιμότητα Νέων» επικεντρϊνεται ςτην αφξηςη τησ απαςχοληςιμότητασ των νζων, ιδιαίτερα των νζων που ζχουν εγκαταλείψει το ςχολείο ή τισ ςπουδζσ τουσ. Γι’αυτό το ςκοπό, το ζργο προωθεί την επαγγελματική και προςωπική ανάπτυξη των νζων όπωσ και την ενεργή ευαιςθητοποίηςη των τοπικϊν φορζων απζναντι ς’αυτοφσ τουσ νζουσ.
Σε αυτό το ςτάδιο του ζργου οι χϊρεσ- εταίροι, ολοκληρϊνουν τισ διαδικαςίεσ μετάφραςησ του υλικοφ που θα χρηςιμοποιηθεί ςτα επερχόμενα «camps». Στα εν λόγω «camps», οι νζοι θα εκπαιδευτοφν για την προςωπική και επαγγελματική τουσ ανάπτυξη. Η εκπαίδευςη περιλαμβάνει ενδυνάμωςη του κινήτρου για ςυμμετοχή των νζων, ανάπτυξη των προςωπικϊν δεξιοτήτων και φυςικά ενίςχυςη τησ απαςχοληςιμότητασ. Μετά το πζρασ των «camps», ενδείκνυται μια χρονικά καθοριςμζνη επικοινωνία με τουσ ςυμμετζχοντεσ, ϊςτε να υπάρχει ενημζρωςη για την επαγγελματική τουσ εξζλιξη.

Last week, the Chamber hosted the EYP Program European Partners and a group of young people for a week of cultural activities to celebrate the Employable Young People Program ( EYP) which has been a two year development.
The EYP Program was created to help young people, aged 16-24 years old, become active members of society and reach a positive destination whether that is education, training or employment.
Throughout the visit to Scotland the young people engaged in a variety of team building, development and cultural activities including Edinburgh Castle, Scottish Parliament, West Lothian College and Viju Group plus many more activities.
The Chamber would like to thank everyone who supported our week of activities including our members, local MSP Angela Constance and MP Hannah Bardell.
